Psychologists, psychiatrists and family physicians are the professionals most trusted by the public to deal with mental health problems. These groups, unlike many others in the helping professions, are regulated by the Health Professions Act of Alberta and psychologists must follow the standards set by the College of Alberta Psychologists. Because psychologists are a regulated health profession, their services may be tax deductible, covered by insurance, or available through third party billing.
Psychologists are trained as experts in psychological assessment and treatment as well as the foundations of human behaviour, emotion and thought processes. Psychologists hold a minimum of a master’s degree that involves university study and residency/internship on the science and evidence-based practice of psychology. It is the extent of this education and training that makes psychologists unique from other mental health practitioners not covered under the Health Professions Act.
